Organisations to Facilitate Demand Generation Workshops for Increasing Zinc ORS up Take: Tender Ref: CHAI 002
Introduction:
Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) is seeking expression of interest from reputable organisations with strong skills knowledge and experience to facilitate a series of demand generation workshops among public health workers. The workshop is aimed at transforming the diarrhoea treatment landscape in Kano, Lagos and Rivers states.
Back Ground:
Each year, nearly 90,000 children die from diarrhoea. Diarrhoea is the third largest single cause of childhood deaths in Nigeria despite the existence of simple, effective treatments with the potential to avert nearly 90% of these deaths. Unfortunately, these treatments do not reach the children who need them: only 25% of children with diarrhoea receive oral rehydration salts (ORS) and less than 1% receives zinc which is the two WHO and UNICEF recommended treatments.
In 2004, WHO and UNICEF issued a joint recommendation that added the use of 10 – 20 mg per day of zinc supplementation for 10 14 days to international guidelines for diarrhea treatment for children under-five. Zinc, combined with oral rehydration therapy to treat diarrhea in children can greatly reduce the severity and duration of an episode and reduce the chance of death by treating dehydration.
Despite this recommendation, treatment accessed by those who seek care outside their homes depends on the type of provider. Caregivers who attend a public or private clinic have a greater chance of receiving the appropriate treatment than those who seek care at other providers like proprietary patent medicine vendors (PPMVs). Whilst both consumer and provider preferences play a role in these outcomes, PPMVs often simply provide the treatment that consumers request for. As scaling up the use of Zinc and ORS represents one of the best and most cost-effective ways of reducing mortality due to diarrhoea, CHAI is working to support federal and state ministries of health to increase provider awareness and build capacity on diarrhoea management using zinc and ORS, generate awareness on and create demand
for zinc and ORS in the communities, and ensure availability and affordability of zinc and ORS in both the public and private facilities
GOAL:
The overall goal of these demand generation workshops is to transform the diarrhoea treatment landscape among public health workers in Kano, Lagos and Rivers states by creating a vibrant, competitive market for zinc and ORS and ultimately saving lives among under five.
Scope of Work:
The organization will manage and ensure smooth implementation of activities outlined below:
1. Event Management Support: Provide logistical, technical, audio-visual support, venue sourcing and other operational support during workshops.
2. Creation of health Workers database: Create a database of public sector health workers by health facilities and LGA to be trained on diarrhoea treatment using Zinc/ORS.
3. Coordination: Support CHAI through coordination with the SMoH, Hospitals Management Board (HMB), State Primary Health Care Management Board (SPHCMB) and Chairmen of health workers professional associations to fix suitable dates for trainings, selection and notification of participants and dispatch of invitation letter for trainings.
4. Monitoring and Reporting: Provide reports of trainings specifying number of trainings conducted, total number of trainees and cadre of health care providers trained and geographical spread of hearth workers by health facility and LGA.
5. Post-training follow-up assessment: Conduct post-training training follow up assessment to monitor use of Zinc/ORS in selected public health facilities with trained health care providers and report findings to CHAI representatives.
6. Resources management: Manage and report in an open, transparent and accountable way all CHAI resources disbursed and or delivered through the organisation.

Against this backdrop, CHAI is Inviting organisation to express interest to facilitate this state wide workshops in Kano. Lagos and Rives States among public health workers. Interested organisations are required to submit their Expression of interest specifying state of their preference to: eidenu@clintonhealthaccess.org .
Expression of interest will be in the following format:
- A written Expression of Interest on the letter head of the organisation.
- Name and physical address of organisation.
- Organisational Profile.
- Evidence of having carried out similar work.
- Key contacts person and contact details.
Expression of interest received will be reviewed in line with CHAI’s values and principles after which a preferred organisation will be Identified and contacted to apply to conduct the workshops.
Closing Date
Only expression of interest received 13th November 2013 which is the advert close date will be considered.
