About Us:
Catholic Relief Services is the official agency of the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops for relief and development assistance overseas; an international non-governmental organization supporting relief and development work in over 99 countries around the world. CRS programs assist persons on the basis of need, regardless of creed, ethnicity or nationality. CRS works through local church and non-church partners to implement its programs. Therefore, strengthening and building the capacity of these partner organizations is fundamental to our approach in every country in which CRS operates. CRS re- established its presence in Nigeria in 2000 and currently focuses on agriculture, governance, peace building, health systems and institutional strengthening programs
Background:
SMILE is a five year USAID funded program implemented by Catholic Relief Services in partnership with ActionAid Nigeria and Westat. SMILE program working with and through local CBOs, is targeting to improve the lives of 500,000 children and 125, 000 caregivers in the project communities. SMILE seeks to improve the quality of life of vulnerable children and their caregivers. One of the overarching approaches of the SMILE program is to catalyse changes and ultimately link these changes in behaviour for improved organizational, technical or resource capacity support thus increasing caregivers’ access to Household Economic Strengthening (HES) resources.
The goal of SMILE is to that the well-being of VCs and their care givers are improved through sustainable, comprehensive and coordinated program. Its strategic objectives are: to (1) strengthen state and LGAs capacity to coordinate and monitor holistic care to VC and their households and, (2) strengthen civil society organizations’ capacity to collaborate with communities to manage integrated and comprehensive VC programs. SMILE’s capacity building interventions are designed to; ensure that States and LGAs use organization and technical capacity to coordinate effective care to VC and households while CSOs use the organizational systems and technical capacity to provide effective care to VC and households
Smile has conducted organizational capacity assessments of CSOs in FCT, Kogi, Edo, Nasarawa and Benue State to determine domains that require organizational capacity development both in terms of systems and staff technical competences. Based on results from organizational capacity assessments, priority domains for CSO organizational capacity development are governance, resource mobilization and human resources management.
